Matthew’s composition training comes mostly from listening to and performing great works (and lousy ones). Composition and improvisation are closely connected, so his background in jazz contributed to his compositional abilities. Matthew has composed or arranged for marching band, wind ensemble, string quartet, orchestra, brass quartet, woodwind quintet, mixed choir, piano, and organ. After studying orchestration with Dr. Christina Laberge at Bowling Green State University, Matthew wrote his first symphonic-scale piece, “The Odyssey”: a collection of character sketches for wind ensemble.
See Jazz Works or Classical Works for more detailed descriptions and listening samples of compositions.
